Michael is the Deputy Commissioner for Cyber Security & Service Management at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), where he leads the cybersecurity and IT Service Management functions, ensuring protection of critical systems, data and services and the delivery of secure, efficient, and reliable IT services.
With a career at the ATO spanning over two decades since joining in June 1999, Michael has held numerous senior leadership roles across technology, digital delivery, and enterprise capabilities.
Michael has played a key role in modernising the ATO’s digital and data infrastructure, including leading initiatives to deliver high-quality data and analytics platforms, building a connected digital ecosystem and integrating ITSM frameworks to improve service reliability, incident response, and operational excellence.
Michael has also served as the ATO’s Chief Digital Officer and Chief Technology Officer, and has represented Australia at national and international forums, including the OECD, where he contributed to the development of the influential Tax Administration 3.0 paper.
Beyond the ATO, Michael has held roles with the Royal Bank of Scotland and F&C Asset Management in the UK, and with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and Microsoft in Australia.
